Yesterday I exchanged the most hysterically funny car Ive ever owned, a 08 Honda S00 for a new 2015 Volkswagen GTI manual 6-speed.
Let me explain.
I bought there my S00 two years while living in San Diego. It wa s the perfect car at the place and the perfect time. I do not think I ever rode with the top up, if the coastal road cruising or scream up and down Mt. Palomar. I liked it. Then last fall, I took early retirement, losing my company car, and moved to Tucson, Arizona.
Once the S00 has become my daily driver, he began to kick my ass. I get too old, and Im too big to be myself bending in and out of the car several times a day. Tucson has perhaps the worst roads in the west and literally struggling to hit the potholes in the rough riding Honda. My wife and I also wanted something spacious and economical to use on road trips instead of our big SUV. The only car that came to mind was as good to drive was the GTI, recent winner of many literary prizes buff. Other "hot hatches" as the Fiesta ST do nothing to me - if GTI was
The choice of the GTI was easy ;. buy was a challenge because of the absurd maddening combinations of options and models on the car. (My dealer later co nfirm that it is frustrating for them and for the consumer). I wanted the base model $ 24.785 due in part to its seats charges Clark Plaid fabric. I also wanted the $ 1.495 package performance that knocks the power up to 10 to 220 and includes improved differential and brakes. The MSRP on this combo would be $ 26,280, but there were none to find. Most available GTIs had additional options or were the SE model with leather, a sunroof and a better sound system and have been sold from $ 29,000 to over $ 31,000. If you want navigation, your only choice is to buy the Autobahn basic model with an MSRP of $ 30,045 and is available only as a door-4. I found myself looking for the base model S 2 door certainly well equipped in white, the official color Car of the State of Arizona.
You can order a VW your exact specifications and color, but you wait 6 months for delivery.
I briefly displayed S00 on Craigslist and found when you sell a specialty car on this site, most people who respond are dreamers, schemers, scammers and criminals credit. I could have spent a few hundred dollars and included the Honda on cars.com or autotrader.com and enjoyed a little more value than trade since a buyer out of state, but it would be after dealing with inspectors, shi ppers, etc. I am not in the mood.
in Tucson you have the choice of a friendly, family or a Volkswagen store owned by a group megadealer notorious north. I chose the first, but I will not answer to this last email they send to all Craigslist sellers and told them I was in the game for a GTI. They do not respond in a characteristic manner.
The preferred retailer had the car I wanted their fate. A test drive confirmed all the hype: the GTI is zippy, has a cockpit worthy of Audi and is a riot to drive. When the store offered a nice discount on the GTI and a recovery in value combined tax savings which was within $ 1,00 I paid for Honda in 2013, the deal was done. The operation was quick and easy, maybe the best car buying experience I ever loved. To their credit, Volkswagen dealers have scores above average in 2014 JD Power Sales Satisfaction Index.
The GTI will now be a test drive long-term CAPD. Well do some comparos with other vehicles in its class. We will try to get a GTI with the Ensemble Performance to know what Im missing. Most of all, we will discover that the VW is to live during a year. The first report will be after 2,500 mile return run to the Yellowstone National Park in a few weeks.
After a day of ownership (and therefore I am still under the influence of ether New Car) my first impression can be summed up as the Volkswagen GTI is a ton of fun and a great value for $ 25,000. Lets see how it behaves on the road ...
