2012-2015
Vehicle Overview
The Odyssey is Hondas first minivan entry, which is dominated by Toyota and Mitsubishi in Japan and by Chrysler in North Americ a. Its Accord based platform made it low, which is similar to a Toyota Innova, and lack of sliding doors didnt made it a success in the Americas. Starting in its second generation model in 1999, models sold in North America is different from what other markets receive with the former receiving sliding doors and a V6 engine which are typical of American vans.
While the first generation Odyssey was officially sold with few units coming in between during the 90s, the nameplate was revived in 2012 via the USDM model which featured a 3.5 V6 engine that rivals the Toyota Alphard. Although no diesel is available, the V6 accelerates well with a cylinder shut-off that optimizes fuel efficiency at low speeds. Ride quality is excellent and does not transmit road imperfections while handling is responsive.
Unlike rivals, this van can accommodate eight people with a middle bench seat and access inside is easy with two sliding doors. Folding the third row seats will r eveal a more cavernous trunk while power seats are restricted upfront.
What Should I Get
The sold variant is the EX-L which gives you a 247hp 3.5 gasoline, eight airbags, ABS brakes, stability control, front and rear sensors, auto on/off headlamps, back-up camera, sun roof, power seats for the front row seats, leather seats, cruise control, power sliding doors and tailgate, Bluetooth and engine immobilizer.
How Much Would It Cost Me
Not much problems were reported so it is safe to assume that this is reliable. Maintaining one isnt for the weak, as this one will have your fuel resources drained and having electric gadgets fail is a nightmare.

So, how are these bargain picks are chosen? Here are some criteria that were followed:
- A vehicle must be available between 2003-2012
- Reported problems from owners are minimal, based from local forums and several of my reviews
- Vehicle value must be excellent, since they are good bargains.
- Must offer a competitive advantage over its rivals and must fit the buyers needs in a category
- Availability in the second hand market must be widespread
Thanks to the mercy of depreciation, SUVs of the medium and large size are now appealing to used car buyers who can purchase these for a lower price. Your familys wish of having an SUV comes timely for the holidays and with The Ultimate Used Car Guide to the rescue, picking the vehicle that suits your needs is easy.
MID-SIZE SUV BEST BARGAIN: 2004-2012 Ford Everest
For the second year, the Everest takes our top pick among Mid-Size SUVs. At these prices, this Ford is a steal with handsome looks, punchy diesel engine (2007 and later), adequate kit, off-road capability, and a shocker, an ECU that is water-proof. With plenty of units available, choosing your Everest isnt trouble.
Recommended trims: MT (2004-2006), XLS (2007-2009), Limited (2009-2012)

Other bets:
2005-2012 Ford Explorer
Only two Ford (and American) SUVs landed a spot on this list. If you find the Everest bare for your needs, then look at the Explorer. Units are aplenty in the market, but its not just that; roomy cabin, long list of equipment, resembles the Expedition, and decent pull from the somewhat ancient engine (the third generation has better engines). Whether it is the first (2005-2006), second (2007-2011), or third (2011-current) generation Explorer, it is one premium choice in the market.
Recommended trims: 4.0 (2005-2006), 4.0 (2007-2011), 3.5 V6 (2012)
2008-2012 Mitsubishi Montero Sport
This year, the first generation (2005-2008) Montero was excluded on this list and remains the second generation that is better in all aspects. Cant afford to purchase a new one? Well, the used car gods answered your prayers by giving you a second hand unit for less. Numerous standard amenities, smooth ride, and a monstrous engine comes standard while interior space is less than the T brand.
Recommended trims: 2.5 GLS (2009-2010), 2.5 GLS-V (2011-2012), 2.5 GLX (2012) - all diesels
2003-2012 Mitsubishi Pajero
Dreaming of owning a Pajero? Now with low prices, your dream can be a reality since attaining one is easy. Generation second point five (known as the Field Master, available from 1999-2008) gives you macho looks but at the expense of refinement. The third generation (2004-2006) and fourth generation (2007-current) models have the presence, more refined engines, and more interior space.
Recommended trims: 2.8 Field Master (2003-2008), 3.2 diesel (2004-2006), 3.2 diesel (2007-2012)
2005-2012 Toyota Fortuner
Another top choice among used SUVs is the Fortuner, which is a common vehicle in the used car market. What is not to love about the Fortuner, especially at these prices? Some nibbles include a matagtag ride quality and the 2.5 engine problem due to fuel quality that are prevalent in the earlier models. But it is one tough SUV and a future classic, too.
Recommended trim: 3.0 V diesel (2005-2012)
2003-2012 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado
We recommend both the junior sized (the Prado) and the senior (the Land Cruiser, see the commentary in the next category), but lets discuss the former more. Both the second generation (2003-2009) and third generation (2009-2012) models do possess the LCs values but shrunken for practicality reasons. Dont bother with the gasoline models, stick with the diesels.
Recommended trims: 3.0 diesel (2003-2009), 3.0 diesel (2009-2012)
LARGE SUV BEST BARGAIN: 2003-2012 Toyota Land Cruiser
With just a few choices in this category, well give the award to the Land Cruiser. Why pick this? A king size interior, great pull from the diesel (go get the V8 if you can), image, durability, and can hack the worst case scenarios. While others guzzle gas or possess limited parts availability, you can never go wrong with the Land Cruiser.
Recommended trims: LC100 (2003-2007), V8 diesel (2008-2012)
Other bet:
2003-2012 Nissan Patrol
Still has the stance for less in mass than the Toyota, the Nissan Patrol has the presence for a smaller footprint. From the affluent people, you can never go wrong with this SUV since it can conquer floody roads, treat occupants with its roomy cabin, and give you the stares. Buy a diesel to save on costs (it is also the most common vari ant out there) and give the gasoline or Patrol Royale a miss.
Recommended trim: 3.0 Super Safari (2003-2012)
2005-2012 Ford Explorer
Only two Ford (and American) SUVs landed a spot on this list. If you find the Everest bare for your needs, then look at the Explorer. Recommended trims: 4.0 (2005-2006), 4.0 (2007-2011), 3.5 V6 (2012)
2006-2012 Hyundai Santa Fe
Competing in the SUV race dominated by truck based SUVs, the Sant a Fe is a breath of fresh air. With a comfortable ride (the third row is tight), powerful engines, and smooth acceleration but boat like driving impression; the Santa Fe is one appealing package. With low prices, finding one definitely starts now.
Recommended trims: 2.2 (2006-2009), 2.2 R (2010-2012) - all diesels

2005-2012 Isuzu Alterra
If fuel economy is the game, the Alterra is there to the rescue. Fuel efficiency is excellent, and when paired with a manual transmission, things get better. It does ride smoothly but speed up and noise intrudes the cabin. At used car prices, the Alterra becomes a great proposition since brand new SRP is very expensive compared to the competition.
Recommended trim: 3.0 4x2 (2005 -2012)

2003-2012 Kia Sorento
Joining the Santa Fe in this list is the Kia Sorento. Choosing the first generation (2003-2009) would reward you an off-road capable vehicle that has oodles of space for a low price. Going for the second generation (2010-current) gives you a more smooth (but noisy) ride, good reliability, and a stylish exterior. Do remember that a third row seat is rare to find.

The new Skoda Kodiaq large SUV has had half its first year allocation pre-sold before it officially went on sale, writes Brian Byrne.
Speaking at the cars Irish press launch, Skoda Ireland MD John Donegan said they expected to sell 1,000 for the remainder of this year, and 1,500 in 2018.
The cars main competition is the Nissan X-Trail, the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe.
At a starting price for the entry level 5-door of â¬28,795, the new car will be a game-changer for the brand in Ireland, Donegan said, bringing the brand into a complete new segment.
"It will be a key model to help us reach an 8pc market share," he added. The brand is expecting to achieve a 6.9pc market share through 20 17.
The Kodiaq is available with 1.4 petrol engines of 125hp and 150hp outputs, and with 2.0 diesels of 150hp/190hp. It comes in FWD and AWD configurations.

Used Car Review Mitsubishi Adventure 1998 Current
Running for numerous terms, Myk Belmonte delves more on why this vehicle continues to win the slot during elections and the buyers around the country.
1998-Current Mitsubishi Adventure
History
There are reasons why some senators stay in their seats for numerous terms and some cars sell well for years despite the influx of new competitors. Despite some old school mechanicals and tons of cosmetic and equipment changes, the Mitsubishi Adventure still attracts some buyers. More on this later.
With the collaboration of Mitsubishi Motors and China Motor Corporation, the Adventure (or Freeca in its hometown in Taiwan) was first released in September 11 1997. Other names used include the Kuda (Indonesian for horse) in the Indonesian market and Jolie for Vietnamese consumers. Some markets placed the vehicle in the graveyard, which in turn senators retire after years of service.
With the growing market for AUVs during the late 90s, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines decided to join the party by assembling the Adventure locally and because of this, the three diamond brand became the number one brand in 1998 due to this (Toyota dominated later on with skyrocketing sales of the Revo). After numerous under the surgeons knife treatments done in 2001, 2004, and late 2009, the Adventure has a customer base ranging from OFW families to UV Express operators. Variants available throughout the years include the taxi exclusive TX, GX, GLX, GLS Sport, Grand Sport, and Super Sport. In 2012, an SE suffix was added to GLX, GLS Sport, and Super Sport trims that added a touch screen monitor with GPS function.
Value and Costs
Scouting for an affordable family vehicle? Place in the Adventure in your list since second hand models cost P230,000-P670,000 that encompasses different model years and variants. So, focus on the condition rather than a year mode l since there are minimal changes.
Having one in your garage does not bring you headaches, especially if you purchase a diesel model, parts are interchangeable with the L300 and you can purchase them anywhere. Just keep some funds for replaceable items.
Exterior and Interior
With various cosmetic changes, lets discuss them one by one. Earlier models possess a grille similar to the Pajero, and high models have design cues to resemble an SUV. Body stickers come standard in the Super Sport, Grand Sport, and Super Sport (until 2007). GLX trims have them from 2012 onwards; if you cant live with them, there is an option of removing them. The side hinged doors for some Grand Sport and Super Sport models is complicated to open as it hogs space (this does not include the FX type door) and this includes opening the spare tyre cover sideways that is a bane in mall parking lots. If you got a 2004 and later Super Sport, worry less sinc e they have their third rows facing front.
Interior quality is a mixed bag, depending on what year model you are eyeing on. Early models are crude while later ones are decent enough. Higher models have wood panels that can be described as luxurious or tacky, depending on who you are asking. Controls are within the reach of the driver and gauges can range from the white of pre-2007 to the blue of later ones. A two spoke steering wheel is standard among trim lines below the GLS Sport but they get a four spoke one in 2007, save for the GX. An entertainment system comes standard but haphazardly located since the rear view mirror gets blocked when in use. Squeezing three bodies in the first row is a violation of human rights while bucket seats are a relief. If you are unlucky to seat in the middle, your knees would hit the dashboard. Three is an ideal number in the middle row but four is a tight fit. Going for those models with a side facing jump seat would mean limi ted head and leg room; the front facing ones have nonexistent space for their legs, it is best left for the kids.
Engine
Choosing your Adventure is like choosing a candidate in the UNA or Team PNoy senatorial slate with a number of trims, but you have an option of two engines. The popular one is the 4D56 2,476cc that carries 62hp at 4,200rpm and 165Nm at 2,500rpm for models prior to 2004, later models get a power update to 73hp at 4,200rpm but has its torque downgraded to 143Nm at 2,500rpm. Hate being flagged by the money hungry ASBUs unauthorized by the MMDA? Then you have the 4G63 1,997cc which possess 114hp at 5,500rpm and 165Nm at 3,000rpm. What shall you pick then? For all intents and purposes, the diesel is the top choice since parts availability is wide spread. If compared with the Crosswinds 4JA1 powerplant, the 4D56 feels muted and quiet. You can speed up a bit due to the low gear ratios, but fuel efficiency is somewhat lowe r and you have to thrash the gear for an acceptable performance. The Galant sourced 4G63 engine, on the other hand, is rough when started but once things get through, it becomes smooth. Fuel economy isnt to be proud of, but still better than the Revos 2.0 one (and even the 1.8 when paired with a slushbox).
Driving Impressions
A well behaved chassis comes standard since body roll is controlled and turning is stable, but high speeds must be planned carefully since the rear can get twitchy. Ride quality can get bouncy and firm when driving solo but since it has a suspension setting tuned for cargo hauling, dont expect a sedan comfort feeling. For a passenger like you, youll like riding in this more than a Toyota Hiace or worse, an Isuzu iVan since getting your head hit is a bigger chance, especially for the latter and ride quality is more worse. Wait, why do I compare an AUV to a heavy purpose van?
Verdict
Still a veteran in the car market, the Adventure still has a following despite not having some new ideas. New ideas from new but unknown faces are encouraged, but there is a reason why old names are still voted. The Adventure still has that name recall, especially if you prioritize your family over yourself.

The Good:
- Affordable to own
- Seating options of 7 or 9
- Quiet diesel engine
- No safety kit
- Limited interior space
- Opening the Super Sports rear is complicated

Used Car Review Volvo XC70 2000 2007
They said that wagons would never go off road and should not have all wheel drive. But Myk Belmonte is impressed with this wagon that can take the roads that lead to nowhere and at the same time, can do your grocery and baby sitting jobs. San ka pa?
2000-2007 Volvo XC70
History
This Sweden based carmaker loves to build wagons and have them on their line-up. In fact, more than 15 wagon models had been made by Volvo since 1966. There are wagons that are aimed for small families and as a city duty driver. Volvo made wagons that substituted SUVs for vacation trips and long drives. But the carmaker didnt play it safe when they released the XC70 in the year 2000. They tried to use a wagon body, add all wheel drive, raise it up, and add some plastic cladding.
Peter Horbury - the master designer behind several Volvo vehicles - crafted and designed the second generation m odel of the V70 series. While the ordinary V70 had no all-wheel drive and a raised suspension, the XC70 is blessed with them. To differentiate them, the V70 looks ordinary while the XC70 is a little bit higher. Production ended for both the V70 and XC70 in 2007 to make way for the third generation model that is launched in the following year.
Viking Motors Inc. (the one who distributes Volvo vehicles in the Philippines) brought in this vehicle to the Philippine market as niche vehicle. Yes, whenever you go to a Volvo dealer youre going to acquire a S60, S40, or on the very least the V40/V50? But, there are adventurous buyers who didnt want the bulk and consumption of an SUV, which meant there is a following for this car. 2008 saw the release of the third gen V70/XC70 and thus, the previous one got the ax the year before that.

Value and Costs
If your wallet and bank account said that you cant afford the newer XC70 that is gleam ing on a Volvo dealership, you can have one via the used car market - or better yet, from Volvos pre-owned section - for just P550,000-P700,000. Your priority is something all around that doesnt have the bulk yet efficient all around, this is one of the few sensible choices if that is the criteria.
Among all the items that should be inspected in the car before driving it off in the lot, is the suspension system. Why that? It is a raised vehicle and youll need it at all times. Have it abused by the previous owner, youll get the trouble of replacing it with brand new ones. Another area of concern is the turbo especially if the one whom your buying your unit drives like crazy.

Exterior and Interior
For the outside looks, you may say that it is the end result when the V70 and an American SUV mated. The increased height meant protection against stones and floods, not going hard core off roading. In the end, do not take this one to Mount P inatubo or youll end up stuck.
As with all Volvos, controls are placed near the drivers reach. Pressing or pushing the buttons would let you say that money is well spent, since they are made of high quality materials. Aluminum is a welcome feature than wood that is fake and prevalent among vehicles that are priced more. There are not much cubby holes but there are numerous pockets spread across the passenger cabin. A strong suit of this vehicle is that you can nearly fit anything in the cargo area (even a corpse! But dont attempt it ok?) thanks to the boxy exterior. If you plan to use it as a family vehicle, they will thank you for that since it can fit five people in comfort.

Engine
Only one engine is available for PHDM XC70s, and this is a 2.5 I5 gasoline engine that has 210hp at 6,000rpm and 285Nm at 1,800-5,000rpm. This engine can be driven at any range thanks to a wide range of revs. You can drive it fast, and you can driv e it slow, but be ready to pay the price at the pump.
Driving Impressions
Driving this beast at highway maximum speeds would show a different behavior when handled in a graceful manner. It would be better to let the computer work the gears for you than using the manu-matic mode, since it is not smooth. It accelerates in an impressive manner and stops in a dime, which defies its extra weight. Have it treated with a corner and it would show some understeer and having some wheelspin. Dont compare the driving characteristics of the XC70 to a BMW X5, but this alone is decent enough for everyday living.
Verdict
Question to Myk: If there is one car you want to own it during your lifetime (which means no purchases or trades until death), what would it be? Answer: Among all the cars available, it would be the Volvo XC70. It has the capabilities of a wagon, the flood-wading skills of an SUV, the riding comfor t of a sedan, and not awkwardly looking like a van.
The Good:
- Very practical
- Ok performance
- Tons of space
- Some desire high ground clearance
- Unpainted bumpers looks cheap
- Safe looking

Car Features Japanese Branded Cars Not Sold in Japan
If there is one market that is hard to enter for most foreign brands, it would be Japan. Although luxury brands from Europe and Volkswagen had found success, the Americans and Hyundai struggled especially Hyundai pulled out back in 2009 and Ford will withdraw the Japanese market by the end of this year. Yes, the Japanese may be somewhat patriotic but they also love foreign goods which match their market.
While the Japanese market had been the epitome of vehicle technologies such as hybrid engines, navigation systems inside the cars, adaptive cruise controls, turbocharging, among others; car sales had been falling ever since the youth arent interested on owning a car (their public transportation is very efficient to begin with). Japanese branded vehicles are hits outside the country with examples like the Toyota Camry as the best selling car in the US, Japanese pickup trucks are best sellers in Thailand, Suzukis are widespread in India, and New Zealand favors Toyotas. With the country exporting a large number of new and used vehicles, nearly everyone has a taste of what the Japanese has to offer.
In this article, we shall discover Japanese branded vehicles sold in the Philippines which are not sold in Japan which covers brands that are either existing or gone which includes Daihatsu, Honda, Isuzu, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota. We are including the cases of the Toyota Corolla and Honda Accord which have two different versions aimed for markets outside Japan. Another case is the usage of a Japanese market name for a vehicle not sold there, which we will include in this list. Last one is whether that particular generation of the vehicle is not sold in the Japanese market.
This would be a two part article with the second one be dealing with the Japanese branded cars that are also available there.
